Introduction: Smoking during pregnancy is the leading preventable risk factor for several maternal and perinatal complications. Several studies show its association with psychological disorders in general, particularly linking depression with anxiety. Thus, the present study aims to clarify the relationship between smoking and maternal anxiety in order to contribute to the knowledge of the topic. Objectives: To evaluate the association between smoking and maternal anxiety during pregnancy. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional, comparative study with prospective data collection in which 20 low-risk pregnant women with a history of smoking during pregnancy and 20 pregnant women without this history will be included, follow at Liga de Assistência Obstétrica and obstetrics department of the EPM. The following inclusion criteria will be used: single and living fetus; Maternal age between 18 and 34 years; Without comorbidities or complications; Without regular use of medications; Gestational age above 20 weeks; Understanding of the research method and agreement to participate in the study. The patient will be asked to answer the relevant questions on the anxiety and smoking scale. The patient's level of anxiety will be assessed using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) questionnaire, validated in Portuguese language and smoking by questionnaire adapted to the present study. The groups will be compared according to the detected anxiety and other characteristics of the gestation.
