Abstract

About 15% of eukaryotic organisms have extra chromosomes to the standard A complement called B chromosomes. These elements have long been considered as inert and poor elements in protein-coding genes. However, recent works have demonstrated the transcription of sequences from B chromosomes. Astyanax fish genus is an interesting model for the study of the origin and evolution of the B chromosomes. Studies of the Laboratório de Biologia e Genética de Peixes da UNESP of Botucatu (LBGP) demonstrate the occurrence of at least five protein-coding genes on the B chromosome of A. paranae, among which three presented differential expression between the gonads of females with 1B and 0B. In this sense, the present project intends to verify if the genes found in the B chromosome of A. paranae are also present in the B chromosomes of other species of Astyanax, as well as to verify the activity of these genes in these species; to investigate if the B chromosome of A. paranae can express its own genes and to analyze if the individuals with B chromosomes have differential expression of genes allocated in the A chromosomes. In this way, it will be possible to characterize the functional effects caused by the presence of the B chromosomes in A paranae; to verify if the B chromosomes present in different species of Astyanax have functional genes and to evaluate if the B chromosomes present in the species of the genus Astyanax had a common origin or if they are the result of independent origin processes.
