Abstract

Baru oil is produced from the barueiro nut (Dipteryx alata). It presents a high degree of unsaturation, containing essential fatty acids such as oleic and linoleic and significant amounts of zinc and ±-tocoferol, which favors its use with pharmaceutical purposes due to its pharmacological effects, mainly for a remarkable antioxidant activity. Nanoparticles are promissing carrier system of bioactive compounds, capable of protecting the compound from degradation and promoting a controlled release, in addition to increasing the commercial value of the final product. This project aims to produce extracts from the baru nut by different extractive methods and to characterize them as to their total phenolic content and anthocyanins, as well as to evaluate their stability and to compare them with the commercially available oil. It also aims to encapsulate baru nuts into nanoparticles, to apply them into topical formulations and to evaluate their stability. (AU)
