Tanaecium is a Neotropical genus of lianas that are distributed along Mexico and Antilles to Argentina. The genus includes 22 species and a broad range of morphological variation, mainly in floral features. Despite the morphological diversity associated with the genus, the taxonomy is still uncertain. More than 161 names were atributed for the genus, although the actual identity of those taxa remains unknown. Due to the broad morphological diversity, nomenclatural and taxonomic problems, this project aims to produce a comprehensive and robust monograph for Tanaecium. For that, we will analyze many herbarium collections, protologues and type-specimens in order to make decisions about the classification of the group and species delimitation. This proposal will be developed during a BEPE at the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Institution that houses the largest Bignoniaceae collection in the World.
