Abstract

This research has the intention to comprehend beside the analyses of romance "The Female Marine" and another literary expression of the nineteen North-American century, how was represented the social, economic and political changes in Boston City between the years of 1810 to 1830. In this regard, we will evidence how literature represented the Early American social inequalities, especially in the West Boston neighborhood and how these representations, permeated by the social nets of romance, contributed to confirm and frame conceptions about class, race, morality and female behavior based on standards considerate adequate or inadequate by secular and religious authorities. For this purpose, we have as sources the romance "The female Marine", reports and letters from the Boston Female Society for Missionary Proposes, administrative documents of the city, census corresponded to the period, among others who, besides of bibliographical revision and analyses, will be interrogated by this questions: Which are the limits and possibilities of approach from a romance as an historical object? How can we comprehend this document in his contexts? In what way can we set relations between the female characters and Afro-Americans represented by the romance and the society demonstrated by the missionarian documents and administrative normalizations? To answer these and other questions, this research will be rooted by historiographical discussions inside the Social and Cultural History. (AU)
