Abstract

Introduction: Syringe infusion pumps (SIP) are infusion electronic devices to drugs and solutions, widely used in intravenous therapy, especially in situations when needs administration of small volumes in slow flow. Such devices allow better infusion control when compared to devices whose infusion control is manual. Despite the benefits obtained with the use of SIP, errors due to mechanical and or human failures may occur during handling. So, it becomes relevant the professionals training responsible for its installation and use. Objectives: Develop a good practice guideline about safe use of SIP. Method: Methodological development research study. The study will be conducted in three stages. The first step, already accomplished, corresponded to the selection of content from an integrative review of the literature. Technical aspects and SIP use were identified in the daily practice of nursing. From this review an instrument was developed to conduct the second stage of the study, held in the year 2017, characterized by discussion meetings. Participants in the discussion included nurses working in public and private hospitals and educational institutions that shared their experiences, practices and doubts regarding the handling of SIP. In the third step, it is intended to develop a guideline of good practices in the handling of the SIP based on the discussions. Expected results: The development of a guideline to good practice in the use of SIP will contribute to the improvement of nurses' competences in the execution of intravenous therapy and to the promotion of a more qualified and safe care.
