In the development of a product, the search of possibilities for materials is usually supported by databases that organize the options according to their physical and chemical properties and criteria such as cost and environmental ones. Restrictions to the use of these databases are the limitation to the registered materials, and the costs of subscription, often inaccessible to researchers and Brazilian companies. This project explores the use of bibliometrics applied to patent documents as a low-cost alternative to support the mining of innovative materials in product development. It investigates the information retrieval strategies based on text mining, and in the concept of materials function in the product, to identify sustainable alternatives to the current composite materials used in aircraft interiors. The expectation is to development a materials search strategy that could be applied to the aircraft interior components, as well as to the other products with similar project requirements. That strategy would also contribute to monitor sustainable materials technologies, assisting the identification of materials use tendencies and helping decision makers. (AU)
