Abstract

This study intends to prepare cellulose foam filled with 45S5 bioglass for bone tissue engineering. Bioglass 45S5 (46.1 mol% SiO2, 26.9 mol% CaO, 24.4 mol% Na2O, and 2.6 mol% P2O5) will be prepared using a traditional melt-quenching technique. The foams will be prepared by lyophilization. Bioglass will be added to the nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) suspension and the mixture will be placed in plastic molds and lyophilized to remove the ice by sublimation. Morphology of foams will be investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Thermal and mechanical properties, as well as bioactivity assessment of foams will be evaluated. Moreover, cytotoxicity and in vitro application of the prepare cellulose foams filled with bioglass will be explored. The advantages in terms of performance and the challenges of using cellulose foams as biomaterial for bone tissue engineering will be discussed. (AU)
