Abstract

Polymeric materials are widely used in the packaging industry because of low density, low cost and ease of processing. Specific applications of polymeric materials for the production of antistatic packaging for electronic components demand properties such as good mechanical properties and low electrical resistivity. Since most polymers are insulators, they accumulate electrical charges, which can generate electrostatic discharges and, consequently, damage the packaged contents. One way to improve antistatic characteristics is by adding conductive materials such as carbon black or carbon nanotubes (CNT). Polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT) is an aromatic polyester with mechanical properties that enable its use in the packaging industry. In this research project, the use of PTT and carbon nanotubes will be evaluated for the development of antistatic packaging for electronic components. The methodology of the project consists of the preparation of PTT nanocomposites with different contents of CNT (0.5 and 1 wt %) through the extrusion process using a double screw extruder. In addition, the surface modification of CNTs and the preparation of a compatibilizing agent (maleic anhydride grafted PTT) will be studied for better dispersion/distribution of the CNTs in the composition. Nanocomposites will be characterized by the thermal, mechanical and electrical properties.
