Abstract

Introduction: Childhood cancer is considered a public health problem, and its treatment is characterized as an exhaustive and painful process. The adolescent can exacerbate feelings as denial and feel trapped by the treatment and pain, and may have difficulty accepting the new life process that cancer imposes. Pain is present in almost 90% of cancer patients. Its inadequate management may be related to several barriers: professionals, the health system and the patient's own. Understanding the factors that influence the pain experience of these adolescents is important to help practitioners develop intervention strategies. Rationale: There is no available instrument in the Brazilian Portuguese language to evaluate the barriers related to the use of pain relief medicines for this population. Objective: To validate the Adolescent Barriers Questionnaire (ABQ) for application in Brazilian adolescent patients with cancer. Materials and methods: Descriptive, methodological study of validation of evaluation instruments. The psychometric properties will be evaluated through the reliability values (Cronbach's alpha and test and retest), validity (content and construct), convergent and divergent validity and analysis of known groups. Expected results: It is expected that the instrument will be feasible and valid for implementation in clinical practice, allowing professionals to devise strategies to overcome identified barriers.
