Abstract

This project is devoted to the investigation of important issues related to the structure and dynamics of ecological networks. More specifically, we will study the stability and feasibility ofbiodiversity patterns in terms of changes in environmental conditions and modifications in thenetwork topology behind competitive interactions. Furthermore, seeking to gain insights intothe stationary dynamics of ecological systems, we will generalize recent random matrix techniques so as to uncover the spectra of random network models able to mimic structural patternsobserved in real ecological networks. Finally, a long-standing question regarding the collectivedynamics of phase oscillators in networks is also addressed in this project; namely, whether thecritical coupling for the onset of synchronization remains finite in the thermodynamic limit ofscale-free networks. These investigations will complement the studies developed in the initialpost-doctorate project.
