In the Northeastern narrative poetry, beyond impersonating ugliness and deformity, black women are frequently associated to the Devil's image. In literature such as cantoria and cordel produced between the end of the 19th century and the decade of 1970 of the 20th century, black women figure, mostly, in a negative manner, being constantly diminished and demonized. The rhymes and leaflets in which women impersonate the worldly evils are not uncommon, with women acting like a diabolic intercessor disturbing the order and moral in force. Particularly inside these cultural practices, such women represent opposite examples of morality, considering that they were born fated to serve as the contradiction of the true feminine behavior. In this research, we intend to analyze the several representations of black women on Cordel leaflets written in the above-mentioned period, as well as to investigate the historical and sociocultural factors that served as base for these representations.
