Abstract

In mammals and perhaps in all vertebrates, it is known that the preoptic area of the hypothalamus (POA) is defined as one of the major encephalic regions involved in the regulation of body temperature, being considered a thermosensitive and thermointegrating region. POA, in turn, communicates with caudal brain regions (medial dorsal hypothalamus and rostral nucleus of raphe) that are involved in the activation of heat production (shivering and nonshivering thermogenesis) and conservation (peripheral vasoconstriction). There are contradictory studies on the participation of the POA in the thermoregulation of birds and no data on the thermoregulatory function of rafe in these animals. Therefore, the present project aims to verify the participation of POA and rafe in the activation of cold-defense (thermogenesis and peripheral vasoconstriction) and heat-defense (evaporative and non-evaporative heat loss) responses in chicks in the first week of life after hatching. To this end, body temperature, oxygen consumption (thermogenic index), pulmonary ventilation (thermal tachypnea or hyperpnea in cold) and heat loss index (based on skin temperatures) will be measured in chicks with inhibition and activation of POA or Raphe and subjected to cold (26oC), heat (37oC) or neutral (31oC) environment. Inhibitions and activations will be performed with local microinjection of Glutamate NMDA and GABA receptor antagonists. In addition, since Rafe is the main serotonergic region of the brain, raphe's serotonergic neurons will also be observed in the thermal responses of chicks exposed to cold and heat and the influence of POA on raphe's action
