Abstract

By the end of the 19th century and early 20th century, São Paulo was one of the biggest immigration destiny in the world. The emigrants from Italy that entered and occupied different places in São Paulo state have become known as Italians. This research aims to investigate the Italian immigrants and their descendants schooling process that made residence in São Paulo city (state's capital) between the last three decades of the 19th century and the first two decades of the 20th century. This selected period is limited by the arrival of a great number of Italian immigrants and the schools' creation. The sources for this research will be the Reports on São Paulos's Public Education, the Annual State Education Reports, teacher's reports, schooling programs, Annual Foreign Education Reports, Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports, newspapers, pictures, reading books, and others. The schools can be considered as civility construction spaces alongside the learning of elementary knowledge such as reading, writing and calculus and the Italian schools as an Italian identity construction space. To understand these schools we need to reconstruct the processes in which pedagogical discourses and material culture constructed them. The pedagogical discourses are part of a complex process in which society defines educational problems and take action in order to solve them. Studying the concept of material culture is about to understand them from the social relations and manifestations established in the school life. The ethnic and civility categories support the documental analyses. (AU)
