Abstract

Graphene based sensors have been attracting much attention recently due to unique properties and sensing performance of graphene, to room-temperature working conditions, and enormous application potential. In this project, to be developed at the Graphene Research Hub at the University of Adelaide, we will investigate the sensing properties of graphene and new graphene-based materials, focusing on gas/vapor advanced sensor applications. Graphene shows high sensitivity to electron charge distribution perturbations that arise when target species adsorb on its surface, changing therefore the sensing response of graphene-based resistive gas sensors. Prof. Dusan Losic's group at the Graphene Research Hub has great experience in assembling graphene into desired architectures of macroscopic scale by various developed strategies, including production and modification of high performance graphene-polymer nanocomposites, graphene thin films, and new graphene-based 2D and 3D printing techniques. We propose here to study and characterize the electronic and sensing properties of different graphene assembled structures produced in the group, for advanced gas sensor applications; including the investigation of how disorder affects and changes the conductance and sensitivity of the sensors based on these materials.
