Abstract

The traditional cello technique has been developed during the centuries since the instrument began being considered as soloist. Therefore, the teaching and the instrument pedagogy has also been developed. Through this course, many ways of approaching the technique of the instrument and how to play it has appeared. Currently, because it's an easier way, the left hand technique is teached using the hand position conception. However, it has been noticed that this is not the most efficient way for the performance. In this sense, this paper seeks to supply the necessity of organizing a method that makes possible the discussion and the use of alternative left hand techniques instead of the hand position system. The work will be done based in both old and new treatises and, by experimentation, exercises seeking the adaptation of the left hand position will be made. It's hoped that this method can help either the performance, making the technique easier and offering new interpretation tools, or the instrument teaching.
