Abstract

The careful investigation of all the anatomical and support conditions of the dental elements is an essential factor for the efficiency of the periodontal treatment. The aim of this study is to compare the possible changes in dimensional geometric parameters of furcation lesions obtained in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images caused by generalized aggressive periodontitis in maxillary molars, after regenerative therapy with the use of enamel matrix derived proteins (EMD). Additionally, the correlation between these parameters and the success of the adopted therapy will be studied. Four parameters will be evaluated: maximum opening area of the lesion, the angulations between the roots, the volume and density of the lesion and the presence of infrabone defects related to the lesion. CBCT images, pre-treatment, will be obtained using the I-CAT Next Generation (Imaging Science International, Hatfield, PA) CT scanner. The angulation formed between the roots, the maximum opening area of the lesion, and the presence of infrabones defects will be evaluated by OnDemand3D software (Cybermed Inc., Tustin, CA, USA). The volume and density of the lesion will be obtained by software itk-SNAP 3.4.0 (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, USA). A correlation will be performed between these parameters before and after periodontal therapy and the success of this will be evaluated clinically and correlated with the values of the parameters analyzed. It is believed that through the results obtained it will be possible to associate which three-dimensional features of the lesion positively or negatively influence periodontal therapy, from which it may guide the best professional conduct to be adopted in relation to the initial radiographic aspects.
