Abstract

Carbon budget assessment at large scales and a better understanding of the mechanisms of carbon sequestration and emissions in agriculture are needed. Indeed, in Brazil more than elsewhere, agriculture offers a large potential for climate change mitigation through agricultural policy. In the São Paulo region (250 000 km2), natural vegetation has been almost entirely replaced by agriculture and urban development. Two major agricultural land covers, sugarcane, and forest plantations share the space with pastures, corn, soybean, orange orchards, etc. These two dominant vegetation types have expanded significantly in the past 15 years, with potentially a large impact on the regional carbon balance. Therefore, the main goal of this postdoctoral fellowship is to apply a biophysical model for quantifying the fluxes and stocks of carbon in sugarcane and Eucalyptus plantations in a different time (from years to decades) and spatial scales (from stands to regions). The methodology considers the approach of integration of two models (GDay and AgroIbis). For the modeling the methodology was divided into three steps:- IMPLEMENT THE GENERIC DECOMPOSITION AND YIELD (G'DAY) INTO AGRO-IBIS- CALIBRATE AND VALIDATE THE EUCALYPTUS MODEL- RUN THE MODEL AT REGIONAL SCALE (São Paulo State)
