Abstract

Athletic performance is mutually dependent upon individual and contextual constraints. Regarding the first one, changes in sleep quality/quantity can impair movement planning and execution. Concerning quality of deliberated practice contents, we highlight two common conducts adopted by physiotherapists and conditioning professionals, with the primary intention to acute enhance musculoskeletal power output or accelerate post-exercise recovery process, namely Postactivation Potentiation (PAP) and Cold-Water Immersion (CWI), respectively. However, remain unknown whether measures of natural sleep patterns influences on technical performance in soccer. To date, literature also did not show a consensus of PAP effectiveness in young populations. Generally, CWI also negatively affect subsequent lower limb movements' that requires strength-speed. Based on these assumptions, the purpose of the project is to evaluate the possible influence of sleep quality/quantity, PAP and CWI on subsequent kicking performance in young soccer players. A sequence of four studies will be performed. A systematic review will be written about the effects of warm-up, exercise and recovery on kicking performance (article 1). Following, three experimental studies will be conducted. Thirty U17 soccer players will be evaluated in a kicking protocol, 18 m away from the goal, using dominant limb. Infrared and digital video cameras will be used to evaluate 3-D lower limb kinematics and performance (ball velocity and accuracy) when kicking. Participants will be monitored by wrist actigraphy devices in order to determine sleep quality/quantity parameters over 24h before procedures and brain activity will be assessed during the kicks using EEG (article 2). To elicit PAP, we will ask 4 series of split squat x 10 repetitions each, using body weight or loaded (article 3). The CWI (~10ºC) will consist in immersion-3 and 10 min-to the iliac crest level, immediately after a running protocol (at mean game velocity plus high-intensity repeated bouts) (article 4). Kicking protocol will be performed before and after PAP and CWI. Dependent variables will be compared using RM ANOVAs, Cohen's d and magnitude-based inferences. (AU)
