Abstract

Achieving sustainability is mandatory for sustaining life of homo sapiens and other beings on Earth. Aware of this fact, governments around the globe has massively invested on new technologies towards minimizing/reverting the negative impacts brought by the new epoch, the Anthropocene. Chemistry is concerned with the transformation between matters and consequently, it has a crucial rule on this process of adapting the life style of our modern society to within the limits of sustainability of the Earth. Under this perspective, the present project appropriately proposes to develop sustainable (and cheap) oxygen reduction electrocatalysts, towards contributing to the development of environmentally friend electrochemical systems capable of interconverting chemical-electrical energies with high efficiency and high selectivity. This project will involve the synthesis of nanostructured carbon electrocatalysts. These catalysts will follow rigorous physical and chemical characterization, e. g. electrochemical techniques, x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and surface chemistry techniques. (AU)
