Abstract

The Urochloa genus (synonymy Brachiaria) comprises predominantly poliploid and apomictic forage grasses, which are the basis for the production of beef and dairy cattle in Brazil. Despite the great economic importance, knowledge about the regulation of gene expression involved in the control of traits of agronomic and commercial interest in these species, such as apomixis and spittlebug resistance, as well as the molecular mechanisms that determine heterosis, are null. Thus, the objective of the present work is to compare the leaves transcripts of the cultivar Ipyporã and their parents, aiming to contribute to the genetic-genomic knowledge of the Urochloa genus. The comparative analysis of the transcriptomes will allow the identification of shared and exclusive transcripts and metabolic pathways, locos and/or genes involved in relevant agronomic traits, as well as functional molecular markers. In parallel, the molecular bases of heterosis present in the cultivar under study will be investigated, from which molecular markers unique to fingerprinting will also be identified. This information will be unpublished and important for the design of molecular strategies in tropical polyploid forage breeding programs, as well as support the Brazilian beef livestock sector to meet current and future demands.
