Abstract Parkinson's disease (PD) is a disease of inexact origin that causes cell death in the substantia nigra, triggering motor symptoms such as rest tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity and changes in gait. The advancement of the disease tends to make the drug treatment inefficient, and neurosurgery for the implantation of deep brain stimulation electrodes is the main resource to soften the motor symptoms. The need for electrophysiological monitoring for the accurate implantation of the electrodes has opened up an important perspective for obtaining electrophysiological data for the study of PD, both by recording local field potentials (LFPs) as also by recording action potentials (spikes) in several structures of the basal ganglia, especially the subthalamic nucleus (STN). This scientific initiation project aims to create a database from records of LFPs collected during surgery to implant electrodes in the STN, as well as the better understanding of the components in frequency that make up the observed signal and its alterations through the induction of movement. The work defines a first step of a long-term collaboration between the group of Neurosurgery coordinated by Dr. Fábio Godinho with the signal processing group of UFABC coordinated by Prof. Diogo Soriano, which aim to correlate electrophysiological attributes obtained from deep brain recording with the different clinical symptoms or subtypes of PD | |
