Abstract

The development of Geography as a science has made possible the systematization of the geographical thought since the 19th century, defining different paradigms, renewing itself, and reflecting the interests of different conjunctures. Along with that, the Brazilian scientific production on geography in graduate programs has increased considerably over the last decades-what can be evaluated based on the great number of programs and subject areas. Part of the production focuses on the study of intermediate cities, considering their singularities in different scales of analysis and the urbanization process in Brazil. There is a connection between the scientific production and society, which experienced changes in scope, theoretical and methodological orientation, territorial space, among others, and these aspects need to be carefully investigated so that one can know the scientific production in universities and in Geography. For instance, the assessment can consider the production from graduate programs in Geography as an object of study. Based on that, our objective is to survey theses and dissertations on intermediate cities from the programs of The University of São Paulo (FFLCH/USP) and The São Paulo State University (FCT and IGCE/UNESP) between 1960 and 2017. We intend to conduct a historical and bibliographical survey, and to qualify and quantify the scientific production using bibliometric techniques. We aim at knowing the diversity of subjects, the territories of research, the works' structure, and the theoretical-methodological orientation. Furthermore, we plan to investigate the relationship between the scientific production and the Brazilian scenario, which will be analyzed according to the major national development plans, the national demographics, and the major government studies on urban networks and medium-sized cities. The results will contribute to studies on medium-sized cities and to a greater understanding of the scientific production as a reflection of conjunctures, political, economic and social structures, and vice versa.
