Abstract

The objective of this study, based on the analysis of squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of the lower lip, consists of: (1) quantifying tumor-associated tissue eosinophilia on the invasive tumor front; (2) to verify if tissue eosinophilia is related to the process of progressive tissue invasion in these tumors; (3) to identify if there is an association between lymph node metastases and tumor-associated tissue eosinophilia, providing some predictive value in the clinical evolution of the patients. A total of 80 patients, previously studied by Assao et al. 2014, with lower lip SCC, submitted to treatment at A. C. Camargo Research Center, São Paulo, from 1970 to 2009 was analyzed. All clinical information such as demographic data, clinical history, locoregional examination, surgery, postoperative radiotherapy, presence of blood eosinophilia, and clinical evolution of the patient were obtained from the Medical Archive Service of the referred hospital. The quantification of eosinophils at the invasive tumor front will be performed by means of a computerized image capture system on surgical specimens of lower lip SCCs previously stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Associations of tissue eosinophilia in lower lip SCCs with clinical and microscopic variables will be assessed by the chi-square test, with a significance level of 5% (pd0.05).
