Abstract Dermatophytes are fungi that cause benign lesions in keratinized tissues of the skin, hair and nails. Trichophyton rubrum is the main species, being able to suppress and evade the immune response of the host. It is not yet known which pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) are involved in the recognition of T. rubrum. Within the PRRs family, the type C lectin receptors (CLRs) play a central role in the recognition and development of the immune response to fungi, in part through the activation of intracellular signaling pathways that induce the expression of cytokines that may polarize to a protective response or not. It is our proposal to evaluate the participation of CLRs in the lesions of patients with chronic widespread dermatophytosis (CWD) caused by T. rubrum. The understanding of these cellular pathways involved in the fungus-host interaction may provide useful information for the selection of new therapeutic targets and the development of new drugs for a better therapeutic approach not only for patients with CWD, since many of these patients present an insufficient response (recurrences) to currently available antifungal therapy, as well as to other invasive and non-invasive fungal infections. | |
