Abstract

Since the mid-1990s the category of spirituality has become a constant term in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The DSM is an instrument of regulation of clinical practice, but also a political device for determining what is or is not considered illness. In dealing with the theme of spirituality, the DSM establishes an important milestone in the broader process of legitimizing this topic in health policies. After all, it is from these definitions that public policies, clinical protocols and diagnostic processes will be developed. This research will focus on the emergence, consolidation and popularization of the "Spiritual and Religious Disorders", described in the DSM. Because of the creation of this diagnosis and its recent diffusion in psychiatry, "differential diagnosis" courses have been offered in training centers with the objective of training health professionals in this area. From the follow-up of these courses, the analysis of the materials and interviews with the professionals involved, this research will allow the development of two important aspects related to the broader project theme: the "negative" potential of spirituality for health and the way in which this policy of diagnoses have established defining frames of what is spirituality for the medical sciences.
