Abstract

This postdoctoral project focuses on investigating the biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) - Secondary Organic Aerosol (SOA) interaction mechanisms, at the ground under the canopy, at the top of the ATTO tower (325 meters) and up to 12 Km altitude, with measurements at the German HALO airplane. The instrumentation will consist of real time aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ACSM), and VOC measurements with Proton Transfer reaction Mass Spectrometry - PTRMS. Further instrumentation shall provide aerosol size distribution, aerosol optical properties, CO/CO2, O3, SO2, elemental composition, OC-EC analysis, etc. Measurements will be done at the ATTO tower, in river boats in western Amazonia and at the HALO high altitude plane. We hope to study in detail the relationship between VOCs and SOA, contributing to the understanding of particle formation and studies of the climatic effects of SOA trough interactions with clouds, precipitation and radiation balance over Central Amazonia.
