Abstract

The theoretical and experimental study of inorganic crystals is an interdisciplinary subject that has been attracting intense research and development due to both the fundamental and applied scientific value. Molybdates matrix exhibit interesting structural, optical and photoluminescence properties. The Bi3+ ion as counterion of the matrix exhibits charge, radius and coordination sphere similar to trivalent rare-earth ions, besides not being toxic to humans or the environment. This research project aims to investigate the structural, morphological and photoluminescent properties of pure and Europium doped crystals of Bismuth Molybdate. Orthorhombic Bi2MoO6: Eu3+ crystals will be prepared by a microwave hydrothermal method. This experimental procedure is fast, simple, and efficient to prepare inorganic materials. Microwave radiation affords internal and homogeneous heating of the material, lower temperatures and shorter times of synthesis. The samples will be investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry and photoluminescence measurements. Based on the considerations above, these new materials exhibit potential characteristics for use in phosphors and electro-optical devices.
