Abstract

The impacts of internal migration comprise several branches of economic theory and have substantial policy implications. From changes in the equilibrium of local labor markets to the provision of urban infrastructure or social mobility, a wide range of questions related to this phenomenon need to be addressed. The main goal of this research project is to investigate and try to answer empirically some of those questions. The first essay will study how internal migration affects Brazilian local labor markets in the destination municipalities, using exogenous weather-inducedmigrant flows from the Semiarid region. The second essay will look at the problem of housing quality and slum formation using the same exogenous shock. Finally, the third essay addresses the role of media content shaping individuals' aspirations and its impact on their decision to migrate. (AU)
