Abstract

Understanding the interactions of nanomaterials with environmental and biological systems is essential for the safe innovation and responsible development of nanotechnology. In this direction, nano(eco)toxicity assessment, nanoinformatics and the regulation of nanomaterials are priority areas in the Brazil-EU Science & Technology cooperation roadmap (2018-2020). The aims of this visiting research project at the University of Birmingham (UoB) are: (1) to study the interaction of nanomaterials with natural organic matter isolated from Brazilian tropical soils and soil-biochar systems by performing analytical excellence characterization; (2) to evaluate the impacts of nanomaterial eco-corona formation on toxicity of nanomaterials in the Daphnia magna model, focusing on co-exposure protocols with other pollutants and metabolomics; and (3) to collaborate with the NanoCommons H2020 platform for developing a Brazil-EU nanosafety research e-infrastructure to support in silico toxicity assessment and nanoinformatics. Eco-coronas, Brazilian tropical soils, and sugarcane bagasse biochar are therefore key strategic and innovative systems in this scientific cooperation. Additionally, a nanomaterial library developed by UoB Environmental Nanoscience group will be utilized during this research cooperation for establishment of systematic nanomaterial structure-activity (effect) correlations. Finally, the execution of this project will contribute to the advancement of fundamental issues in environmental health and nanosafety research, promoting international cooperation towards open transnational access of harmonized nano-protocols, experimental data and safety-by-design approaches.
