Abstract

The Agronomic Institute (IAC) has being responsible for performing the genetic improvement efforts of the rubber tree in Brazil, that has as one of the main pillars obtaining individuals with high production potential. The performed population descended from parental clones that were phenotypically selected in Malaysia and introduced in 1952 at the IAC Central Experimental Center (CEC), and also of primary materials from the Amazon region. The implementation of a genetic breeding strategy depends essentially on the background knowledge of the genetic mechanisms responsible for the genetic inheritance of the character to be improved, such as: the number of genes that govern it, gene actions and effects, heritability, repeatability, and genetic associations with other characters.The project work plan considers to characterize the descriptors and to study the genetic diversity of the IAC's germplasm bank, through multivariate analyzes (by clustering and main components), and to estimate the genetic parameters of the superior genotypes from the IAC's breeding program. The research results should contribute to the development of unique quality cultivars and high genetic potential for increasing productivity, increase the number of cultivars registered in MAPA (Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply), and offer new options of rubber trees for the production sector.
