Abstract

The gastropod genus Agathistoma is represented by about 20 extant species. They are relatively small in size and occur in tropical and subtropical waters of the eastern Pacific, Caribbean Sea and the South Western Atlantic. Three species of Agathistoma occur in Brazil: A. viridulum, A. hotessierianum and A. patagonicum. A. viridulum and A. hotessierianum share anti-tropical distributions but are each morphologically homogeneous across their ranges. Paradoxically, A. patagonicum is more geographically restricted but shows a high degree of morphological variation. Patterns of gene flow and genetic isolation are not known for any of these populations. The historical processes of Western Atlantic diversification may be better understood through the study of the biogeographical patterns in these species of Agathistoma. Because of their distinct distribution, previous biogeographic hypotheses, marked by disjunctions, dispersions and local extinctions, can be tested by means of their molecular footprint. In this project, we will develop a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) dataset from double-digest restriction site-associates DNA (ddRAD Seq) sequencing of samples across the distribution to identify phylogeographic patters and processes affecting these species and infer phylogenetic relationships of Agathistoma based on RAD-sequencing data.KEYWORDS: Marine phylogeography, Agathistoma, phylogeny, RAD Seq, NGS.
