Abstract

This study will analyze the protective effect of experimental solutions containing TiF4/NaF and chitosan (at different viscosities) on early enamel erosion (by reflectometry) and erosive enamel wear (by profilometry) in vitro. For this, bovine enamel samples (n=15) will be distributed to the following treatment groups: (1) commercial solution with SnCl2/NaF (800 ppm Sn+2, 500 ppm F, pH 4.5, Elmex®, GABA Int. AG, Switzerland, positive control); (2) 0.042% NaF and 0.049% TiF4 (NaF: 190 ppm F; TiF4: 190 ppm Ti4+ and 300 ppm F); (3) similar to 2 but with addition of 0.5% chitosan (Ch 50 mPas), (4) similar to 2 but with addition of 0.5% chitosan (Ch 2000 mPas), (5) no treatment (negative control), (6) 0.5% chitosan (Ch 50 mPas) and (7) 0.5% chitosan (Ch 2000 mPas). The samples will be submitted to pH cycles (0.1% citric acid 4x90s/day interposed by artificial saliva) and daily treatment application (after the last erosive challenge, 1x30s/day) for seven days. After the 1stday, the surface reflection intensity changes will be measured. After 7 days, the erosive enamel wear will be quantified using a contact profilometer. The data will be statistically compared (p < 0.05).
