Abstract

Ferromanganese crusts and phosphorites are commonly found at oceanic rises and are highly enriched in trace and rare earth elements. However, the environmental conditions for one to form are totally different and almost opposite from the other. The aim of this work is to evaluate the formation of both deposits in the Rio Grande Rise, a poorly studied rise in the South Atlantic Ocean near Brazil. In order to do so, a range of analytical techniques will be applied to understand their structure, mineralogy, chemical and isotopic composition and age. The bulk chemistry will be characterized, as well as the individual layers chemistry in order to create an evolutionary model of the geochemical environment of Rio Grande Rise. This work is included in the project FAPESP 14/50820-7, "Marine ferromanganese deposits: a major resource of E-tech elements", and will highly important for the presence of Brazilian works in the RGR.
