Abstract

Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (TIDs) are fluctuations in the ionospheric plasma, influenced by gravity waves originated from several sources, e.g., convective storms, earthquakes, orography, auroral heating and others. The applicant in his doctoral has developed the visualization and characterization methodology of the TIDs in an unprecedented way in South-Southeast of Brazil using detrended Total Electron Content (TEC) maps. For this reason, improving the knowledge of TIDs over South America (low and mid-latitudes) and specifically in the Andean region is very important to the scientific community. So far no studies of TIDs using detrended TEC have been done over the Andes. Therefore the project proposes to conduct a study of TIDs, using maps of the detrended TEC observed between January 2013 and December 2015, to locate the source region using the reverse ray tracing technique and to investigate the possible wave generation mechanism witch could be associates to orography or convective storms. The present study will characterize the TIDs (e.g., wavelength, period, phase velocity and direction of propagation) and analyze the seasonal, latitudinal and longitudinal variations over South American continent, as well as to map the source locations and generation mechanism of these waves in the lower atmosphere.
