Abstract

The use of high strength steels has allowed an even greater reduction in the thickness of the plates used in the cold formed sections, besides allowing sections with increasingly complex shapes, with edge stiffeners and longitudinal intermediaries. Thus, the modes present in these sections tend to be even more pronounced, in some cases occurring the interaction between them. The longitudinal stiffeners are inserted into the web of the profile, which is the thinnest member of the cross section, improving its performance mainly in relation to the local mode. The ABNT NBR 14762: 2010 does not provide a specific procedure for the dimensioning of these sections, making it necessary, many times, to resort to international standards. As an alternative, ABNT NBR 14762: 2010 presents the Direct strength Method, which can be used in the design of any sections, requiring, for this, an elastic stability analysis, where the critical modes of buckling and corresponding stresses. In addition, experimental studies available in the literature indicate that there is an interaction between modes of local and distortion. As a result, procedures often result against security because they do not adequately assess such behavior. The objective of the work is to study the behavior of members section "C channel" stiffened with intermediate stiffener submitted to the compression, through nonlinear numerical analysis via Finite Element Method, using the ANSYS software. The results obtained will be compared with those from normative procedures and experimental tests performed by other authors.
