Abstract
Changes in the forest structure due to habitat degradation can shape the connectivity and permeability of arboreal habitat and cause behavioral changes in animals, such as in their movement and activity budget. Ultimately, such behavioral changes can affect their reproduction rate and the survival of individuals. For this reason, understanding the movement patterns and the energy expenditure of species in degraded landscapes will help us develop guidelines for habitat management, in order to increase the population viability in such environments. We chose the Black Lion Tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysopygus), an arboreal primate endemic to the Atlantic Forest and threatened due to the fragmentation of its habitat, as a model for estimating how the forest structure influences its movements and energy expenditure. For this, we will establish energy expenditure parameters for the species through an experiment with captive animals using doubly labeled water (2H218O - DLW) and Daily Diary loggers (DD). This experiment will validate the correlation between the metabolic rate estimated from the DLW method and the DDs, allowing DDs to be used in free-living animals for the same purpose. The DDs record, every 0.25 s, six variables for determination of movement and energetic expenditure of the individual. Such data will allow estimating the three-dimensional movement of the lion tamarins and the energy expenditure related to behavioral activities (e.g., foraging, resting). Using linear models and generalized linear mixed models, we will test the effects of the changes in forest structure on the movement patterns and energy expenditure of the black tamarin. The results will support guidelines for habitat management, in order to favor the movement of black tamarin in fragmented forests. (AU)
