Abstract

Adolescents and young people have became significant representation in the Brazilian population. In general, the adolescent does not present high rates of illness or mortality, in comparison with the other phases of human cycle. Even so, there are individuals who, throughout this phase of many changes and new adaptation, experience some level of suffering. This can affect development in various segments of life, such as school, family and / or affective, thus making them more vulnerable to behaviors that intentionally cause harm to their health. Due to the great demand for care for the phenomenon of self-mutilation in adolescence, as well as the incipience of the literature in this discussion, the aim is to understand the meanings of self-mutilation in adolescents from the perspective of professionals in education and Primary Health Care. The study will be anchored in Symbolic Interactionism. Data analysis will be based on thematic analysis. The relevance of this study is in the possibility of reflecting the potential/fragilities of care to this phenomenon and to this specific public. It is understood that the approximation of the meanings attributed to these actions may point to future interventions and innovations, especially in the Nursing area, looking forward to qualify adolescent health care, a public still neglected in the various care contexts.
