Abstract

This project aims at examining the transposition of a monomodal narrative into a multimodal one. It does so by analyzing Takahiro Arai´s manga Les Misérables, volume 1 (2015) which adapts Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, volume 1 (1967). The goal of the project is to study the process of transposition of textual literary language into manga language to identify the impacts of the multimodal imagetic construction and the effects of the image/text relation as performed in the genre manga. The theoretical framework includes works by Mussarelli e Miteollo (2012) on continuous/discontinuous; by Pietroforte (2004, 2011a., 2011b.) on visual semiotics, expression and content plans; by Genette (1976) and Gomide (2014) on novel narratives and Victor Hugo's work; by Goffman (2012), on the notion of footing and its relation to the process of personification/despersonification of Jean Valjean; and by Dionisio e Vasconcelo (2013), Dondis (2003), Hemais.(2010), Kress e Van Leeuwen (1996, 2006), Vieira (2010) on multimodality, textual linguistics and transposition.
