Abstract

The objective of this Project is to perform the paleomagnetic and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) study of acid volcanic, subvolcanic, pyroclastic and epiclastic rocks (rhyolites, ignimbrites and dacites) from the Novo Horizonte Formation, situated in the Bahia State (São Francisco Craton). These rocks are associated to the initial Espinhaço rifting, occurred at about 1750 Ma. The main purpose of this study is to determine a key paleomagnetic pole for the São Francisco Craton for this age, and compare it with coeval paleomagnetic poles from other cratonic units (e.g., Amazonian Craton, Laurentia, Baltica and North China) in order to establish the paleogeography of these units during the formation of the Columbia supercontinent.
