Abstract

The present research project aims to understand how media literacy contributes to citizen political participation among young high school students in Brazil and Portugal. The research supports the thesis that media literacy contributes to the exercise of citizenship. It starts from the idea that access to information is not sufficient, but that there is also a need to learn how to filter, select and interpret the information. To achieve this goal, a survey and study of works related to media literacy (BUJOKAS, 2008), (BÉVORT & BELLONI, 2009), (PÉREZ TORNERO, 2010), (BAUER, 2011), PEREIRA et al 2015), social media (RECUERO, 2010) education (GUARESCHI & BIZ, 2005), communicative competence (PÉREZ TORNERO, 2007) and citizenship (HACK, 2002), (VICENTE, 2009). Subsequently, a survey of experiences in media literacy in high school in Brazil and Portugal will be done, as well as a group of young students of the last year of high school, with an average age of 17 years, in Portugal and in Brazil , with the purpose of verifying how media literacy contributes to the formation and citizen participation of these young people. A dialogue will be held between the two groups, via digital platform, with the objective of identifying factors that effectively contribute to broaden and stimulate their participation. Finally, based on what is collected and evaluated, guidelines will be proposed for the use of media literacy for Brazilian education. (AU)
