Abstract

This research project is dedicated to the investigation of the aesthetic-visual realm of the Guarani-Kaiowá, a Tupi-Guarani speaking people who inhabit the southern region of Mato Grosso do Sul. This realm will be analyzed through a diverse set of elements - productions, practices and knowledge, both contemporary and by them regarded as traditional - that should contribute to illuminate the relations that the Kaiowá establish between the domains of visuality and orality, implying in an examination of the entanglement between image and word, categories that are central to this investigation. We propose a focus on the domains of ritual, shamanism, and cosmology in order to examine how the fields of the visible and the invisible are diversely tensioned and their interrelations are managed by those who master the acts of seeing. To support this investigation, we will adopt an approach that combines ethnography, visual experimentation, and archival research. (AU)
