Abstract

Microbialites are biosedimentary deposits of carbonate formed by the action of benthic microbiota and occur as distinct forms depending of the environment parameters as bathymetry, hydrodynamic conditions or even, the type of bacterial community. The study of these sedimentary deposits is fundamental for the understanding of the sedimentary and environmental dynamics of the present and past carbonate systems, especially those evaporitics and ecologically stressful. This project here presented propose the study of the microbial facies and the isotopic and geochemical signatures of the microbialites from the Irati Formation, basal unit of the Passa Dois Group (Permian, Paraná Basin). This innovative approach is fundamental to delineate and reconstruct the environments in which such unit was deposited, especially those related to the stromatolite occurrences of the Sta. Rosa de Viterbo Town - SP. The importance of studying the microbialites of the Fm. Irati is multiple and is justified by the restricted number of works concerned on this problematic, specifically those focused on detailed morphological description and geochemical and isotopic analysis. The study of Phanerozoic microbialites is also important due to its rarity in the geological record and their increasing potential as reservoirs for hydrocarbons. Finally, based on the scenario above, the study of microbialites of Fm. Irati can be considered as a priority tool in the definition of the depositional and paleoenvironmental conditions that acted in the inner seas of the SW portion of the Gondwana Supercontinent during Permian.
