Association between electronic media use and emotional/behavioral problems among youths

Abstract

Electronic medias use among teenagers is growing around the world. International researches suggest the effect of this use on children and youth mental health. The present study aims to evaluate the association between electronic media use and emotional/behavioral problems among Brazilian youths. The sample will be composed by 150 boys and 150 girls, aged 11 to 18 years old, attending schools of São Paulo's metropolitan area, and their respective parents. Instruments will be CBCL, YSR, MAF-P e MAF-Y and a social demographic questionnaire. Inferential statistical analysis will test: 1) the association between electronic media use and emotional/behavioral problems considering both parents and youths perspective; 2) association between parents and youths reports about electronic media use; 3) influence of the variables age, sex a socioeconomic level on the association between electronic media use and emotional/behavioral problems. Homogeneity tests will be conducted to determine which statistical test will be used. All analysis will be conducted using the software Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 19.0). We expect that the results will contribute to understand the influence of electronic medias on teenagers behavior.
