In this project we propose the growth and investigation of the crystalline electric field (CEF) effects in the Ce2RhIn8 compounds, pure and doped in the In site. Previous investigations of the similar CeMIn5 (M = Co, Rh, Ir) family indicate that the rich phase diagram of these materials is the result of a subtle balance between the competing RKKY interaction, Kondo and CEF effects, influenced by the system's dimensionality (c/a ratio of the compounds' structure in this family). Therefore, understanding the evolution of CEF parameters in a system whose dimensionality is different from the 1-1-5 compounds, such as the 2-1-8 series, allows for a deeper insight into its role in these systems as well as the emergence of interesting phenomena with technological potential. In order to achieve this goal, we plan to synthesize the single crystals using the metallic self-flux technique. Their structural and physical properties will be investigated through X-ray powder diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity under external pressure and specific heat measurements. The concentration of dopant in the chemically substituted samples will be determined through wavelength and energy dispersive spectroscopies (WDS/EDS) and previous neutron prompt gamma activation analysis (PGNAA) data. Following the samples' characterization, a computational routine based upon a mean field model is going to be used to extract the CEF parameters. This will help determine the CEF levels together with mapping the evolution of the ground state CEF wavefunction. The found schemes might be corroborated by inelastic neutron spectroscopy (INS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements to be performed by collaborators. Such studies are likely to help understand the role of CEF effects in the emergence of unconventional superconductivity in tetragonal systems and guide the search for high-Tc superconductors. (AU)
