Abstract

This project's subject matter is the political actions of the businessmen of the textile industry and soybean production chain towards the relationship between the Brazilian economy and China during Lula's governments (2003-2010). Both sectors are part of the internal bourgeoisie, which composed the power bloc during the aforementioned period. The hypothesis presented is that there are clashing views between those sectors about Brazil-China relations, and that these positions are determined by the gains and losses of each sector regarding Sino-Brazilian relations. We believe that the economic results obtained by each sector reflected in divergent positions from each one concerning Brazilian's foreign policy for China. It is suggested that Brazil's foreign policy adopted a political position of conflicting subordination towards China. The research will consist of the following steps: i) literature review; ii) analysis of economic and diplomatic data on the relationship between Brazil and China; and iii) investigation about how the associations that represents the productive sectors in question have expressed their positions about the presence of China in Brazil's economy, through analysis of documents and interviews. The study of these sources seeks to identify if there are contradictory positions among sectors of the internal bourgeoisie, in order to explore how these conflicting interests affected Brazilian foreign policy in relation to China.
