Abstract Despite numerous advances in researches involving cancer treatment, many efforts still need to be directed toward finding more efficient and selective therapies. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an emerging technique to treat certain types of cancer. The PDT is associated with the role of light in changes human cells, as example the solar light exposure can induced cancer cell. However, the mechanism which light can cause changes in human cells is still poorly understood. In this way, the proposal of this Project is use light to induce molecules properties that can lead cancer cell membrane damage. The photosensitizer (PS) is a molecule that it will exhibit useful photophysical properties after light irradiation. In this account different research groups have been developed ruthenium complexes (PSs) with tuned photophysical and biological properties to better fit at the PDT uses. In this Project the main interest is study the photosensitizers properties to induced cancer cell membrane damage after light irradiation. The membrane breakdown or damage can lead cell death. A preliminary investigation based on spectroscopic experiments, showed that membrane damage by photosensitizer can be mediated by electron transfer reactions. Under this condition, spectroscopic experiments using ruthenium complexes as photosensitizers will be conducted in cell membrane model. Furthermore, to better characterize the system, experiments involving in vitro cancer cell studies will be performed. Therefore, for this study a collaborative research that involves inorganic chemistry and biochemistry is of critical importance and the environment provided by Professor Mauricio da Silva Baptista (Universidade de Sao Paulo) and Professor Claudia Turro (The Ohio State University) will be essential for development of this Project. | |
