Abstract

Human tooth enamel is the most mineralized tissue of the organism, characterized by layers of prisms in regularly alternating directions. Those successive layers form the Hunter-Schreger Bands (HSB) that appear as light and dark stripes when seen through side lighting, similarly to fingerprints. We previously demonstrated that the HSB pattern is highly variable and unique for each tooth. Thereby, the biometric pattern of the HSB can be a useful method for personal identification, since enamel can resist through time and extreme environmental conditions. Although promising, popularization of this method is hampered by technique limitations in the image processing. The aim of this project is to develop a software to enhance the contrast and highlight the HSB. Once Hunter-Schreger bands pattern resembles fingerprints, we will also assess whether it allows enhancement in the quality of fingerprint images obtained from distance.
