S-PRG varnish efficacy on enamel white spot lesion remineralization

The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of varnishes containing different concentrations of S-PRG when compared to sodium fluoride 5% varnish on remineralization of enamel white spot lesions. Ninety bovine enamel cylindrical specimens will be prepared with 2mm thickness and 6mm diameter. The surfaces will be polished and divided in three portions. On first portion Knoop microhardness will be measured and protected by nail polish. Artificial caries lesions will be created on non-protected surface by demineralization solution for 32h. A second portion will be protected for caries lesion reference. A third portion will receive the varnish treatment. Specimens will be divided in 6 groups (n=15). Four experimental ones, with different S-PRG concentration (10%, 20%, 30% and 40%) and two control groups, negative control (NC) and NaF5% as positive control (PC). After treatment a pH cycling will be performed for 8 days. Varnish application and cycling will be performed twice. The superficial microhardness (SMH) of the treated area and the cross section microhardness (CSMH) of the three areas will be measured in each specimen. Statistical analysis for the type of varnish on SMH will be one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test, and for the type of varnish and remineralization depth on CSMH will be two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test.
