Abstract

The goal of the present study is to evaluate the inactivation power of three presentation forms of ozone (O3) on Pythium insidiosum isolated from horses. Pre-cultured aliquots of the pathogen will be divided into six (6) groups according to the treatment: O3-H2O, O3-Gas, O3-Oil, Control-H2O, Control-Gas and Control-Oil (n = 5 aliquots /group). In the O3-H2O group, the aliquots will be immersed in 20 mL of ozonated distilled water (69 ¼g O3 mL-1) for 15 minutes. In the O3-Gas group, the aliquots will be exposed to an O3-rich atmosphere (69 ¼g O3 mL-1) for 15 minutes. In the O3-Oil group, the aliquots will be immersed in 20 mL of O3-enriched sunflower oil for 15 minutes. Control-H2O, Control-Gas and Control-Oil groups will be treated respectively with pure distilled water, oxygen gas and non-ozonated sunflower oil. The volumes and the times of exposure of each control treatment will be similar to described for the respective presentation form of presentation in the treated group. Immediately after each treatment, the aliquots will be incubated at 35°C for four weeks. The parameters to be evaluated during the post-treatment period are: a) Inhibition of growth rate, b) Cell wall damage, c) germicidal/germistatic action of O3, and d) changes in the superficial architecture of P. insidiosum.
